Jacob and Flora’s Library Quest
This game was designed for Jacob and Flora (my nephew and niece). The idea was to create a platform game that could only be completed by working together.
The game requires players to share one keyboard and often take turns. I was hoping to promote cooperation between the players. In reality it created a frustrating experience as 4 small hands tried to use a single keyboard. Also, taking turns was not popular design decision. Valuable feedback, for me to take forward!
Both characters have unique abilities, Jacob can activate a shield to deflect cursed books or giant pigeons.
Flora can use her martial arts skills to kick the giant pigeons out of the way.
Players are active while on screen. Pressing T changes who the camera follows, this allows players to explore on their own when needed.
This was the first game I made using GameMaker. It doesn’t feature any sound and I ran out of steam making the artwork. Gosh that sure takes a lot of time!
I made it at the end of 2023 after following Shaun Spalding’s complete platformer series, which is excellent.
